bees and nature
Florapis@toot.wales

Beekeeper with deep interest in the natural world. 3, much loved, dogs. Oh, and some gardening.
I originally joined in Nov 22. Left in 25. Back again, as I missed so many of the people, determined to avoid all the bits that made it an unhappy experience last time so if I don't follow you back it may be for my own self protection. Happy to find nearly everyone still here
Wales :red_dragon:

Last autumn I thought I'd give using the ASHP a go, we've never used it. So I turned it on for a day but nothing happened and I gave up. This autumn I tried again. I watched youtube videos by men who gabble and adjusted the settings to perfection. Things did happen, lights came on, numbers rose, the HP puffed but no heat hit the radiators so, after a week, I texted the lovely man who services it and he popped in today 1/2

Added bonus of having the heating engineer in this morning is that I got a phenomenal amount of housework done, even washed a lot of doors and skirting boards down, almost fit for visitors

Charging the phone earlier in a useful extention lead with 4 little sockets for such things as phone cables. I had just sat down near it to drunk a cuppa when there was a crack and a puff of smoke, from the socket not the phone, thank goodness. Would it have caught fire if I had not been there, I just don't know, it was very hot.

Anyone else as annoyed with spell check censoring words that some puritan in the USA thinks are inappropriate to use by marking then as misspelt? Is there any way to stop it short of switching off spell check? Examples are crack and cock. The other day my photo library tried to censor the accompanying photo by telling me it may contain inappropriate content. It clearly thinks there may be little willies (another censored word) hiding in bee hives 🤷♀️

Someone has left a small bag of dried fruit and nuts sealed with an hare Krsna sticker in the honey honesty fridge🤔 I am torn between how sweet and how odd. We know no-one involved with that movement. Would you risk eating them?

Lizard up under a hive lid. Because we were early and he was on the shaded side he was fairly torpid so I got a couple of picture. Normally they freeze for a split second and then are gone in a flash of bronze #wildlife

Not something you see very often. A hard bodied tick of some sort on a hive lid. Makes you glad your in wellies and covered from head to foot 😳 #wildlife

Slept well so cooking with gas so far today🤞. I've finished spinning out the honey frames I had uncapped yesterday and trimmed mildew leaves in the polytunnel. Made a flask of tea and a very basic lunch and soon we will be off out to inspect the hives and put clearer boards on at the apiary we widened the path to yesterday #beekeeping

You would not believe how heavy that little machine is but we got it up without either of us getting an actual hernia or ruptured disc. Now to get it down and back up at the apiary #beekeeping

Good test of the bee proof bee suits in the next apiary. The bees were right up the pole, no idea why. Only stings on the hands, 3 for me and one for Stuart #beekeeping

A bowl full of naturally soft set honey. Different honeys set at different rates, to different firmness and, most importantly, to different crystal size. To make soft set, or creamed as they call it in the USA, you mix a smooth, buttery honey with very small crystals so its not gritty into a clear honey with no existing crystals in it. This is then seeded with the fine crystals and will set much the same. #Beekeeping

@zahradie@mastodon.social neighbour shades the greenhouse. Its a bit of a catch 22 isn't it as they need the light and those also look quite heavy. I think shade would be better than covering but is hard. Mulch is the really good thing you can do to keep the moisture in the soil at the roots so any water they do have is available for as long as possible. I do cover things against frost though

Does anyone know of anywhere that some one who lives alone can go to recuperate after an operation for about a week in south Wales or maybe the Bristol area. Not a care home for the elderly, this person is not really elderly or usually infirmed. There does not seem to be such a place #Wales
