I wanted to stop controllers calling external services, however deep in the call graph. So I built a PHPStan extension (still in beta): mark external calls as 'slow', forbid 'slow' in controllers, and let it flag violations. @m1ke @mnapoli it's only this year I've started using Claude. I'm seeing value already. Friday, it found a bug buried in my codebase. I gave it a 2 line prompt. It identified the bug within 4 mins of 'thinking'. I'd spent the best part of the day before looking for this bug without success. I'm getting much better at directing it to write code. I spend most of my time in plan mode. It then writes the code and, if I've paid attenti...

Like many software developers, I fear AI will be taking most of our jobs. So in conjunction with my friend, Louise Blockidge, the best tradesperson I've ever met. We're starting a bootcamp to retrain software developers as plumbers; the pay is great, it won't get take by AI and when you fix something it stays fixed, unlike every microservice I've ever deployed. I'm back from an excellent few days at Confoo, where I gave two talks. One on testing, the other on custom PHPStan rules. It was great to see so many other amazing talks and have lots of interesting hallway chats. And the added bonus of Mount Royal at night. A lovely walk in the snow. And Canada's best Poutine.
