@jeffowski@mastodon.world I'm sure both autistics and non-autistics find this person's stimming annoying. Like, shouldn't other people's stims be more distracting and annoying to autistic people?

@drgroftehauge@sigmoid.social @jeffowski@mastodon.world it's nothing alike. Neurotypicals are annoyed by stims because they're percieved as transgressions, or as a lack of self control that would be shown to the monkey pack that's cool to be with. We'd be serious monkeys in a serious office and Dumby the dumb would roll on the floor in a socially awkward and unacceptable way. They wouldnt care about the sensory impact of the stim. The stim itself would urge neurotypical to patronizing, humiliating or punishment behavior. Autistics would never work in the same openspace at the first place, because they dont want to have to mask. Also they have a disproportionate fear that anything they'd do could lead the monkeys to patronize humiliate or punish. Everyone would have an isolated personal space where whatever the stims would stay secret. It's fundamentally different: workspace wouldnt emerge the same if majority were autistics. Stims would be considered by design. With a majority of neurotypical the opposite emerges: optimizations so that people can be seen and be together and look professional. Also people should be close to feel the team sprit and make coffee break packs or lunch break packs. State that to an autistic person he'd say "hell yeah". To a neurotypical you'd ear stupid wtf distorted bullshit like "yeah but you dont like to work seriousely" or "that's disrespectful". That's not. With 97% neurotypicals, the probability to have more than 2 autistics in the same room is < 2 per 100k. We're NEVER in environments designed for our needs. We always have to explain how we work to others. And it's exhausting. I'm personally in this strange phase where I can't work. Because the perspective of being scared of my facial expressions, being forbidden to move, and having to reject 2 coffee breaks and 1 lunch break everyday makes me anxious to work anywhere. It's usually 6-12 months between two jobs. 100% impossible to explain to a neurotypical.

@drgroftehauge@sigmoid.social That's a good point! In practice, though, empathy wins out. I don't mind another #ActuallyAutistic person's stims, knowing what it would cost to suppress them. In fact, when #autism doesn't come with learning difficulties, I'm gratified that the other person feels comfortable enough to stim in front of me. If an autistic person does have learning difficulties, trying to make that person suppress stims is particularly cruel, although many allistic (non-autistic) people don't understand that. @jeffowski@mastodon.world
