Too many people judge the disabled for what we do to survive. The truth is you can’t fathom what it’s like to live in a body that’s betrayed you. To exist in legislated poverty with no reliable help or care. To be left by the wayside to die and abandoned by almost everyone. People will claim to understand. They will try and empathize. But then they say things like “if it were really that bad you would have support”. Or “you just have to try harder and get another doctor”. They don’t actually listen to us. They talk over us. They’re utterly convinced that they know better about our suffering, and that if we really wanted to get better we could. We simply don’t want it bad enough. Nothing could be further from the truth. Disabled people are incredibly resourceful. We’re surviving in a system doing its utmost to kill us. If “wanting” to get better was all it took, no one would be chronically ill. If support showed up whenever it was truly needed, no one would suffer. If healthcare helped, we would be lined up at the hospital doors. Please don’t judge what you can’t understand Try and realize it’s your own fear and denial that makes you need to believe everything is “fixable”… because you can’t fathom getting sick and never getting better Disability comes for almost everyone… help us build a better world #disability #ableism #eugenics #chronicillness

  • @broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca Yup. My Long Covid is not taken seriously, and no doctor is trying to make it better anymore since they tried the steroids and they only helped the right ear (left and throat are fully effected, right gets mini-infections every fee weeks..). I'm too tired to try to get them to care again. And I need to save to afforf a private doctor for sleep things, and LC, since I was failed by a neurologist so thoroughly that no basic health will take me anymore for sleep stuff...

  • @broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca “you’ve still got long covid?” Was what someone asked me in surprise the other day 🙄 In all fairness my version looks mild on the outside, unless my eyes are bleeding! But I can still do most activities of daily life, once I rest and pace

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca Personally the “you can do its!” are so frustrating when they persist right after telling someone that I can’t physically do something and they think I just need to try harder. I’m still young and don’t have visible outward signs of FSHD (unless you know what to look for).

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca I also think this ties into a larger narrative of so many people refusing to believe just how poorly we've organised things across the world and how bad things really are for millions of people. It affects disabled people but also other groups who belong to minorities. Even people who are affected in one area often are unwilling to recognise it is just as bad in another area. I guess part of that may be an instinctive survival mechanism or our necessity for hope. And, of course, the narrative sold to us by most politicians and much of the media. Honesty requires courage and a necessity to actually come into action, which is too big an ask of most people.

@broadwaybabyto the truth is that individualism has irreversibly infected people's lives. Today, unfortunately, even the word "empathy" has become a product.
