"waah waaah mastodon is slow and glitchy sometimes, how can you bear it" bitch I grew up with dial up. I scrolled endlessly through the hampster dance, half the jpegs broken. I spent an hour looking for and downloading a simple mp3. I waited my 54 minutes to continue watching a ropey stream of true blood with unsynced audio. I still use tumblr. you are like tiny baby

@stavvers@masto.ai Was talking to someone the other day about the bad old pre-internet days when we would see someone in a film and think "I know them from something else... What was that?" and then would just never find out.

@stavvers@masto.ai If you had to look up something obscure, you had to go to a library. If it was Saturday evening, you'd have to wait until the library opened on Monday morning.

@stavvers@masto.ai I bought CD-ROMs with downloaded copies of Internet sites and files on. One of them had indexed about 4 months of posts from a public flight sim forum and that was a wild time, reading all those threads which I would never be able to respond to.

  • @stavvers@masto.ai I just told people how in the old days when we were producing a short video, you had to actually manually turn a knob for the effect of blending. VHS tape producing was chronologically fixed, so I´ve you found an error later, the whole process meant you either forgot fast you found an error or you had to do all the cuts and blends again from the point where you messed up...

@stavvers@masto.ai Yeah, I got this as a cute GIF this morning when I tried to go to #Mastodon. Then I wrote my blog story, came back, and it was working like it usually does. Not a big deal. Now I just have to persuade a few people to read my blog, ad free, and clever as all get out takes on politics.

@stavvers@masto.ai The comments about how it's glitchy drive me crazy. As a brand new administrator who has no idea what he's doing I can attest to how resilient Mastodon is as an application. For the most part, no matter what dumb stuff I've done behind the scenes, when I restart the Mastodon services it comes back online and just works. I think what most people are describing as glitchiness is the result of volunteer admins heroically scaling up their instances in real time to accommodate the huge surges in volume assailing their servers. The fact that the larger instances are staying up at all, and with minimal interruption of service, is a testament to how great of a job they are doing. I can't imagine what they've had to through in the past month. Hats off to all of them.

@stavvers@masto.ai I dealt with dialup on 9/11, 25 or so miles from the Pentagon, with one extended family member working in downtown Manhattan and another piloting a commuter plane in the Northeast—and completely out of touch for a couple days (parked in Montreal, I think). Phone lines were a bad joke, and texting wasn’t any better than phones, so email, such as it was, was it. Not a lot of sympathy for folks complaining that their cat pictures take more than 5 seconds to load…
