BTW: Always a SUPREMELY bad idea to enrage gamers. https://www.pcgamer.com/software/ai/sam-altman-argues-that-its-bad-you-want-dram-in-your-computer-and-not-a-data-center-actually/

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social I think the bubble will pop a lot sooner. Anthropics opts for junk-status already

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social - trillions have been ‘lost’ in value in the past week as some realized that blowing hundreds of millions of profit that could have gone to shareholders have instead been redirected to building data farms that no one wants in their backyards, has created negative media attention, and has created shortages / price spikes for related consumer products - and all for the purpose of providing a service no one needs. Or worse, wants. And those that invested are asking why.

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social local AI is mostly supported by Chinese companies, ironically. Because US companies don't want it to happen, while EU folk don't like AI.

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social Yes, you are partly right, but partly wrong. It all comes down to people... (Jan)

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social ComfyUI is pretty easy to setup. The problem is that they sent the price of hardware through the roof, raising the entry barrier

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social I somehow lack superlatives to describe bros like Altman. Stupid, egotistical, greedy, arrogant, fascist, all don’t seem to be enough and I want to stay away from “less than human” But if you think you’re apart from the rest of humanity yet want to determine everything for the ‘little people’ what should you be called? If you hate humans, fine. Find youself a nice cave to live in and don’t bother the rest of us

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social the CEO of IBM was interviewed recently. He said they could provide hardware to run open models within a company scope that would be 10% of the cost of OpenAI / Anthropic / etc.

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social The Recurring Pattern Financial historian Edward Chancellor, in his book Devil Take the Hindmost, identified this sequence repeating for over 180 years: 1. Revolutionary technology emerges 2. Abundant capital floods in 3. Speculative frenzy drives valuations beyond fundamentals 4. Reality check triggers sudden collapse 5. Overbuilt infrastructure becomes tomorrow's foundation Where is the speculative investment bubble called #AI currently at?

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social Nailed it! People running their own #software on their own hardware independently is 👻👹🕷️ SCARY 🕷️👹 👻 for every proprietary software/#SaaS corporation like "Open"AI. This reminds me, I probably should eventually check out local+libre AI tools myself, just to see how useful they are atm and if they are as ethical as they seem. I was never against #AI per se, just against the corporate excesses. #FAIL #SmallTech #OpenAI #capitalism #independence

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social It's actually bad that they need multiple dozens of terabytes of RAM to get their AI to output the same quality that can be done by some random nerd's basement home lab setup using Ollama on a 2016 CPU, 128GB of RAM and a 5 year old GPU with 16GB of vRAM. Give me a break. These #AI corpo nutjobs wouldn't know good engineering if it hit them in their overbloated stock price, and EMP'd the RAM sticks that they are hoarding in their warehouses in their stupid price-fixing scheme.

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social I see late adopters now jumping directly to local. Some of them have never given one of these companies a single cent. I love that.

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social Sam Altman can shove his crapshit products where the sun don't shine. I wont buy into his business model, and cannot recommend it to anyone. These are BS (as in fecal matter of the male bovine) machines. No value in fattening TechBros.

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social He needn't worry. I don't want AI, so he wasn't going to be getting my money anyway. I enjoy thinking.

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social The bubble is going to pop any day now. Long before that scenario happens.
