Kara Kennedy essay on the way the new Dune films distort the portrayal of key characters and concepts from the book. She’s right. I hated the portrayal of Stilgar and Chani in Dune Part 2. I nearly left about halfway through watching it. I had pre booked a second screening for the next day. I didn’t go. Dune 2 was the most disappointing cinema experience I’ve ever had. #Dune https://blog.apaonline.org/2026/02/26/dunes-discomfort-with-religion/

@ianRobinson@mastodon.social And the day was going so well... I suppose I needed something to get annoyed with... Anyone who has a bio claiming they write Wikipedia articles can easily be dismissed.

@ianRobinson@mastodon.social Well there's another reason not to watch the latest version. On religion (or more properly the religious) in Sci Fi, I think rather highly of both B5 and DS9 and their handling of such things. JMS is not religious but he shows the absolute best example of living your religion (Delenn and some other Minbari) and the worst (Centauri cynicism, the hidebound Grey Council, the hypocrisy of the Narn). All sides get a fair hearing. The same with DS9 and Bajoran faith interacting with Star Fleet's secular humanism. Delenn in particular walks the walk. S2E18 Confessions and Lamentations is obviously a take our reaction to HIV, but Delenn goes into quarantine to care for the Makab even though it is unknown if the plague can spread to Minbari. A better example of faith in action I cannot imagine. And then her suffering watching everyone die... Religion and the religious can be good and they can be bad. So can the secular. I loath anyone (religious or not) who belittles the other side's point of view.
