@desea@snug.moe As someone who has read the light novels and seen the show its very anti-war. The main theme has always been emotion vs logic. passion vs pragmatism. The antagonists are almost always passionate people driven by rage or lust or nationalism or faith. While I very much agree the book can be dry bloated reading, the show understood the assignment and while I disagree on some changes there are others I really like.

@desea@snug.moe I think one of the best scenes in the anime adaptation happens with Zettour and Tanya fighting back to back, showing not only their strong bond but their shared philosophy and mission. Two individuals who keep fighting despite wanting to be doing anything else. Fighting to survive a world of madness collapsing around them. It's focused on them, in that moment everything else is at the periphery. The show is leveraging your investment of these two characters and that itself says something. It's saying this is what we believe our audience is invested in, these are the characters and the shared bond and ideology we're putting forward as the most important. If you lack that investment, if you lack the connection to those characters and their shared struggle the scene falls flat.
