@bashbunni@mastodon.social A news commentary channel I like has Members Only videos sprinkled in their feed. It's a bit clutter-y but it also makes me pause & consider membership. I also understand creators gotta pay the bills.

@bashbunni@mastodon.social personally I'd rather pay my favorite creators than to watch ads or pay Google in the hopes they forward that money. But sites like YouTube has built an expectation that everything should be free. Tbh I kinda feel that way too, because how do I pay for something I know almost nothing about? (Sorry if this is irrelevant lol.) I vote for ad-free Patreon I suppose. And PeerTube, hehe. PeerTube really needs a fair and good monetization system.

@bashbunni@mastodon.social Also some creators I really like are also on Nebula which has a better profit sharing setup for creators so I try to watch on there when I can.

@bashbunni@mastodon.social I was reading this thread on Twitter and realized that it’s more about ads like this one: https://youtu.be/GIPR4MEohow?t=110 or when someone interrupts a video to promote something unrelated to the channel. Is this a problem that affects you?

@bashbunni@mastodon.social I'm just gonna keep aggressively blocking Google's ads no matter what any of you guys do. If I must pay to see your content, I want 0% of the share to go to Google. Fuck Google. Greatest dot com disappointment of my lifetime

@bashbunni@mastodon.social WRT ads on YouTube premium... Viewers subscribed to cable TV in the 1970s hoping to avoid commercial advertising (aka "commercials") on broadcast TV. Cable providers added commercials. The Internet attracted some viewers. Commercials followed. "Cord-cutters" went to paid streaming services. Commercials followed them there, too. Where there are viewers, there are commercials, even on "commercial-free" Public Media, where they're called "a word from our sponsor"

@bashbunni@mastodon.social ...but that history lesson on "commercials" is tangential. Personally, I disable Google Adsense on my blogs. I'd surely love some income, though. When my daughter spent the summer raising money for a local cat shelter, she offered them for free and placed a cup for donations next to them. She took in about 10x more than if she sold them for $2 apiece.
