When you lose someone who was carrying the torch, it really hurts. Even if you didn't know them well, or at all. Because it's not just the death of the person, it's the hitch in the race itself. It's the feeling that things just got a tiny bit harder... And they were already so hard.
The best way to honor them, after you've taken the time to sit with the grief and give it its due... Is to look at the torch. Remind yourself why it's worth carrying. Why you cared. Why your heart sang to see them running with it.
... Then grab the piece of the flame nearest to you and start running. Doesn't matter how small the piece is.
The running will feed it.
