I have a theory for the difficulty mystery: Problem 757, like many other PE problems, has the property that you can just brute force the first few terms of the sequence and then plop them into OEIS to get some major hints or possibly a full solution. Personally I would never do this because it takes most of the fun out of these problems, but I know that a lot of people consider OEIS fair game.
