be honest. when you first heard about or saw foldable mobile devices, likely years ago, how did you feel?

sorry for the lack of clarity, folks. I should have said "smartphones with foldable displays" -- I was too close to the recent news that Apple is going to make foldable smartphones.

@datn When I saved enough money for a foldable phone (I believe it was some Ericsson at the time), sliders came so I went for that…

@datn That might be cool, but I worry about the devices being overly fragile.

@datn do you refer to foldable smart phones or do you refer to foldable feature phones?

  • @datn My vote applies to flip phones. I had one for a decade, still the phone I had the longest. Still regret having to replace it because the battery died.

@datn Psion series 3, in Byte magazine... and even then it was the hinge and/or ribbon cable that kept breaking. #Psion

@datn A solution that didn't have a problem. Extreme engineering challenges FOR WHAT⁉️ Boardroom porn. Make phones thin in a race to the bottom, then fold them to make them twice as thick again, where did that logic come from?

@datn@xoxo.zone Foldable device, great, space for physical buttons. Foldable screen, not for me.

@datn I was pretty excited, and I've now had a Z Flip (currently on a Z Flip 7) of some form for years now. Still really like the form factor, and haven't had any issues with the fragility

@datn In school I had a Sharp EL-9000 calculator. Foldable. Eventually the folding circuitry failed. Any folding electronics I see today, I remember the loss of my favourite calculator. https://calculators.haywalk.ca/view?calc=sharp%2Fel9000superscientific
