This is shameful discriminatory and misogynistic reporting. People aren’t choosing disability to be “cool”. Young women don’t have to “prove” to you that they’re sick. Disability rates are skyrocketing because we’ve left a disabling virus rip through the population for over 6 years. The insinuation that disabled women who post about their experiences are “entrenching a culture of economic activity” is ableism. They want to shame us into being silent about our suffering. Make noise. Let’s tell the Telegraph this disgusting article should be retracted https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/09/05/disability-became-cool/ #ableism #eugenics #disability #chronicillness

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca I'm neurodivergent. I wouldn't call it a disability, but sadly it definitely is. It shapes who I am and what I can achieve in life; who I can reach, where I can be, my mental health, anxiety, comfort, etc. And still, getting a fucking notarized sheet of paper that says so costs thousands, and requires a degree family involvement I don't have (and for my mental health, I'd rather not, anyway). Anyone who barks at the rise/normalisation of disabilities is robbing *us* of a place.

  • @broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca Murdoch Press. You know Fox? Rupert Murdoch began as a newspaper baron doing the same shit in the UK and Australia, and the Telegraph is one of his flagships. They're the worst level of right wing vomit generally, with a thin veneer of respectability because our countries didn't do 'mask off evil' like our US cousins until very recently (thanks to US dark money, most likely). This article is a good example of the old school 'mask on' fascism you'd expect from the Telegraph.

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca did they call out the businesses for “entrenching a culture of economic inactivity” when they started laying off people to replace them with LLM output?

  • @broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca The telegraph is just aping the right-wing philosophy - It's a maga one that only sees that that for one person to do well another must do badly, which is ok for them as long as it not them that is doing badly.

  • @broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca This article sums up ableism perfectly and ignores completely, how little we know about our own bodies. The absences of a clear pathology IS NOT an argument against an illness. It just proves that we don’t understand it. The absence of evidence is NOT the evidence of absence. But what do you expect from someone cheering for Reform UK. Basic logic still didn‘t make the news.

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca * Torygraph Also as a more-or-less ablebodied¹ person I felt disgusted from the lead alone. 1. Or a “future person with (more) disabilities”, like the most of us.

  • @broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca There have been a few attacks like this in UK press lately. Our Gov’t faced a big rebellion when it tried to slash disability benefits last year and had to (partially) withdraw. This feels like a bit of scene setting for another go - hardening the ‘undeserving’ narrative to split the opposition. Really vile!

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca Found this gem: "I was surprised to find during my research into the # Pots community that many individuals also experienced autism, Tourette’s, Long Covid, chronic Lyme and so on. It would require incredibly bad luck indeed for so many of these women to be afflicted by so many" (my emphasis here) "completely different illnesses with totally different medical causes." Yeah, it would, if they were in fact "completely different illnesses with totally different medical causes". But they're not. POTS is one of the most prominent Long Covid diagnoses, caused by dysautonomia triggered by Covid. Chronic Lyme symptoms and Long Covid symptoms have lots of overlap, including POTS. These illnesses aren't mutually exclusive or psychosomatic. They're linked *at the root causes*. From Johns Hopkins: "Secondary POTS means that POTS is associated with another condition known to potentially cause autonomic neuropathy, such as diabetes, Lyme disease, or autoimmune disorders such as lupus or Sjögren’s syndrome." If they could do the research to find out these people had co-occurring illnesses, presumably they could do the research to find out that these co-occurring illnesses are not in fact "totally different". The author is lying to the reader to undermine the article's subjects' trustworthiness. It should be taken down or have highly visible mandatory disclaimers that it contains lies.
