This cute beast is Boiga westermanni, the Indian egg-eater. They’re found across most of central india, and their entire personality is that they eat bird eggs. Just bird eggs, nothing else. Naturally, evolution cooked up some specialised hardware for this. One of their vertebrae grew a literal horn coated in an enamel-like substance that pokes right out into its intestine through a gap in the wall. Nature built an internal egg cracker. Their jaws are kinda like an egg spoon. and they swallow the egg whole and later spit out the shells. I dont think they get calcium deficient. They share a range with our friend the saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus) and they seem to have borrowed heavily from its aesthetic, for safety from predators, im guessing. They have V-shaped head markings, dorsal blotches, keeled scales on just one zone on their bodies that they rub together to make a hissing sound when threatened, just like the vipers do. it gets eerier. the only other snake that has been found to have similar egg eating tendencies is found only in Africa, the Dasypeltis sp. and *those* fellows are dead on mimics of Causus rhombeatus or the rhombic night adder, a distant cousin on our home grown saw scaled adder. Nature is bonkers. #Snake #EvolutionIsWeird #HighlySpecializedTool
