A great effort to highlight on #IndigenousPeoplesDay: Sean Sherman grew up on the Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota Sioux reservation. Low quality, processed government food (such as the regime rails against!) is responsible for a lot of metabolic disease in Native communities.
Forced assimilation stripped many Natives of their traditional knowledge of living sustainably off the land, so Sherman became a chef and painstakingly reconstructed these practices.

His books and other efforts to decolonize Native cooking have received media coverage and numerous awards. He hopes to improve issues of poor health and poverty created by longstanding racist practices. Not only Natives would benefit from these practices, though.

@MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social I love, love, love #SeanSherman's perspective and recipes, and have made a few of them for special occasions. I learned so much about food history and cooking techniques. Highly recommended!
