@navi@social.vlhl.dev on the one hand, i get it on the other, i can't help but think "everybody dying" is also both inevitable and unsustainable (nobody can die if everyone is already dead)

@navi@social.vlhl.dev the tech industry's power is all soft power. they'll let everyone use ai products for free. using those products will be required to stay competitive, in every corner of the economy. then they can charge whatever they want. and they'll be too big to fail. even if that's not the exact story, they're clearly telling investors *some* story about soft power (since profitability isn't the story), and investors are responding a billion dollars at a time

@navi@social.vlhl.dev with enough people and organizations addicted to it, it will be inevitably subsidized from government spending.

@navi@social.vlhl.dev I don't like the reckless way those companies are being managed right now, but don't confuse the companies with ideas and technologies. A lot of dotcoms failed around the turn of century (the one you and I work for just narrowly avoided that), but internet remained. The way AI is being done today is unsustainable, and unfortunately I guess this will bring problems, but LLMs won't go back into the Pandora's box.
