President of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde just resigned. This had been speculated though she said she wouldn't. There is one theory she would do this so the current crop of national leaders can elect her successor instead of the potential far-right troupe coming in next year just before her non-renewable term expires. The other theory is that she will play a role in the French presidential election, including as a candidate - something she has also declined citing her age as a key reason. Lagarde is 70. I am far from politically aligned with Lagarde but she has offered stable leadership at one of the EU core institutions while everything else feels like its in permanent crisis. She's also one of the very few leaders who has been pushing hard on EU sovereignty and plays a key role from the financial angle, including implementing the early stages of the Digital Euro. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/oct/29/european-central-bank-chief-christine-lagarde-to-step-down-nine-months-early #ChristineLagarde #ECB #EU
