Do I have any Dutch followers or people who keep up with Dutch news and healthcare? I’m reading about a 2 year old disabled child who was euthanized but most of the reporting is from American right wing organizations so I don’t want to share or take it at face value. It seems there’s a law that allows parents to request Assisted Death for very sick children ages 1-12 and I would like to confirm that is true and ask what the general consensus is around this? I’m obviously very concerned about the precedent and the slippery slope of euthanizing disabled children… #netherlands #dutch #assisteddying #euthanasia #disability #ableism #eugenics

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca Here's more about the case (Google translate is usually quite good at translating Dutch to English): https://www.nu.nl/binnenland/6409188/arts-handelde-zorgvuldig-bij-levensbeeindiging-van-1-jarig-kind.html It seems to have been a combination of severe untreatable epilepsy, insomnia, difficulties swallowing and a high likelihood the child was going to die. Multiple doctors looked at the case and reached the same conclusion that the child was not going to get better.

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca ... the people that have zero issues seeing children die of treatable illnesses because their parents cannot afford health care, have issues with health care in the Netherlands? Makes sense...

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca I don't think its true but will do some digging. I remember investigating their laws in 2021 when we were preparing presentations against C21 which they ignored anyway.

@SrRochardBunson@universeodon.com @broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca I can! there's very strict rules around this * there has to be unbearable suffering * there has to be no realistic outlook on improvement * there must be a second opinion from independent doctors in this case, the child had severe epilepsy with multiple attacks per day, and had difficulty breathing. also it was mostly blind and couldn't talk, tho those things in itself of course are not a reason for assisted death; tho I suppose it did add to the unbearable suffering of the child. general consensus (afaik) is that this system is fine; everyone knows that it's a very delicate thing and it is treated as such. I'm sure many a US right wing org will jump on this and frame it as child murder or whatever, but it's absolutely not seen that way by dutch people (until that US propaganda reaches the moron part of our population, after which no doubt there will be protests over here too, that is how it goes these days :blobcatfluffangry:)
