Unless you live under a stone, everybody will have heard about PHP today. Now, please realize that the vast majority of Open Source Software, like PHP, and including PHP, is largely maintained by **unpaid volunteers**. If you agree that this is inconceivably irresponsible: let this be your call to action and FUND THE OPEN SOURCE PROJECTS YOUR ORGANIZATION RELIES ON. Saying "Thanks" once in a while is not enough and does not make open source sustainable.

Having said that, accompanying your funding with sincere thanks will be appreciated! So... I thank the PHP security team and the PHP Core devs involved, as well as everyone else who worked hard in the lead up to today's releases to get distros updated and server patches on stand-by for all their mitigation work. I see you and I appreciate you! And yes, I put my money where my mouth is and even as a tiny company, I fund PHP as well as contribute to it as that's the only responsible thing to do.

@jrf_nl@phpc.social IMHO projects like PHP should be supported by tax money and not be dependant on private sponsoring. This goes for all relevant open source software that is used by many, and yes very often by public offices.

  • @jrf_nl@phpc.social Okay I have heard of it, and seen it everywhere...but dear tech people, could you please explain what "PHP" means? Like write it out as entire words? (^_^)* Most people don't understand the tech-talk so trying to figure out how it effects us gets really hard. And how to fix it gets even harder since it is more big word, or abbreviations that make no sense. Simple words for simple people. (Also before anyone may think me stupid - yes, but also this technically my third language)

  • @jrf_nl@phpc.social Commercial closed source has a far, far worse track record, and of course also cannot be cryptographically trusted ever, precisely because it's not open source.

@jrf_nl@phpc.social I trained as a software developer. Never heard of PHP before my first work. I was trained in C/C++, Fortran, Matlab, Shell, HTML, then in Assembly. I learned a bit of PHP for my second work, by myself, then Python.
