I guess I'm on BlueSky now! I've just brought up my PDS and you can reach me at https://bsky.app/profile/massivebox.net
I know it's a controversial protocol, and I'm still just kinda checking it out. But it seems promising.
ActivityPub has a good amount of issues related to federation. New servers don't know others by default, so they have a very narrow view of the whole network until users specifically look up accounts from other servers. This is good for community-centered instances that see federation only as a bonus, and works for a lot of people, but it makes it harder for casual users to discover content from outside their "bubble".
ATProto handles things way differently, with a lot more centralization, but it does work better with this sort of stuff. Once the PDS was up, I could immediately reach everywhere on the network! I still have some tests to do, but I haven't had any issues with those things ActivityPub fails at, like only being able to see some comments from my instance because it's not federated to all others.
I think I'm going to have to write a blog post about this - the "write protocols, not software" approach is proving itself not to be the smartest choice, if mass user adoption is a goal.
