Earlier today, the Nobel Assembly announced that this year's Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for their work on understanding the human immune system. For @TheConversationUS, immunologist Aimee Pugh Barnard explains the significance of the three scientists' work on regulatory T cells and immune regulation, which started back in 1995. "Continuing to unlock the secrets of immune regulation can help lead to a future where the immune system can be precisely tuned like a thermostat — whether to turn it down in autoimmunity or rev it up against cancer," Professor Pugh Barnard explains.
