Started watching it yesterday, then stayed up late to finish it. It hits, but not quite as solidly as the first one. The story is trying to do more things but it makes it harder to feel invested in all the numerous character deaths - there's a lot of stuff with a MacGuffin that is also a character, but also does body possession, and what we end up seeing of that is a lot of twisted facial expressions while the other characters go "huh what" a lot, which became tiresome upon repetition. The way Kai Ikarashi directs tends to flick over moments with a lot of passing glances and extreme close-ups that deliver the image before the brain is prepared, which feels very 2000's-Hollywood to me now, and contrasts strongly with the more classically staged way in which Imaishi did the first one. I think the first episode ended up being the strongest since it establishes the main characters well. 7.5/10 Trigger show which still means it's really good.
