A year ago, The Newsground was an idea. I kept thinking about how my dad used to read the news every morning with a cup of coffee. It felt like the opposite of the way we consume news now: doomscrolling, distrust and an endless feed. I wanted to build something that brought a little of that feeling back, while doing serious investigative journalism and keeping the reporting free to read.
