Jessie Kesson (1916โ€“1994) was born #OTD, 28 Oct. Taken from her mother at 10, she spent 6 years in an orphanage; although she displayed obvious academic talent she was denied any chance of further education & was sent into domestic servitude aged 16. Despite these & other hardships she became a highly regarded writer whose works explore ordinary womenโ€™s lives with clarity & poetic prose A ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿงต 1/8 https://www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/9964/jessie-kesson-novelist #Scottish #literature #20thcentury #womenwriters #workingclass

โ€œShe had to create herself and tell herself her own story, defining herself as best she could: this is what made ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ด in particular such an urgent and demanding taskโ€ โ€”Isobel Murray, โ€œJessie Kesson: Writing Her Selfโ€ 2/8 https://asls.org.uk/jessie-kesson-writing-her-self/ #Scottish #literature #20thcentury #womenwriters #workingclass #workingclasswriters
