Urban sketchers: If you use watercolor in your sketches, do you use watercolor paper? Are your sketches pencil or ink (fineliner or ballpoint)? #MastoArt #sketching #UrbanSketching #watercolor

  • @peterdrake@mstdn.social I prefer a more smooth surface as I often draw with a fountainpen first. For the moment I have a Fabriano sketchbook "Drawing" 160 gsm. I draw on both sides. But my favourite paper is Canson 180gsm which I buy on a roll and make the sketchbooks myself. But I also just finished a spiral pad; Fabriano 200gsm and now I have a pad with 300 gsm where I can really pour water. #urbansketching

@peterdrake@mstdn.social I sketch in graphite pencil or waterproof ink (fountain pen or dip pen), and yes to watercolor paper when using watercolors.

@peterdrake@mstdn.social For my more "serious" efforts I use a proper watercolour sketchbook, but most of my watercolour journal stuff was with less light washes in a cheaper sketchbook. Line work is usually fine liner of brush pen over pencil.

@peterdrake@mstdn.social i like what's called "mixed media" paper: thick enough for watercolor, but smooth enough for pen too

@peterdrake@mstdn.social I’ve done a bit of everything there. What I found I liked was a small sized Canson XL mixed media book, a #2, and a set of Inktense pencils or bricks to use to color and ink. I don’t have any now, unfortunately, but that would be my toolset if I were to go out and do it now.

@peterdrake@mstdn.social two sketchbooks that I take out with me often are 140gsm Talens sketchbook and 165 gsm moleskine. I find them too thin for watercolor, but to work great with pencil watercolors, inktense pencils and water soluble graphite. They buckle on occasion when very wet but come back to being flat when dry. Sketch from Rocky Butte is on Talens paper and the foxgloves are in moleskine. Both done with Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer watercolor pencils, van dyck brown and sanguine. #mastoart #urbansketching #watercolor #sketching
