  • Some days you can buck the senior-faculty stereotypes and some days you... can't... First, I give a midterm and don't have to provide a single clarification to the class. Then, I am unable to print the sample solution (or anything else) for the grading session, so I lean on the front-desk staff to do it for me from a thumb drive. (To be fair, this is surely related to a power surge on Friday that the building is still recovering from. But still.)

  • Student: Is this class curved? Me: What do you mean by curved? Student: I don't know.

  • The autotester for some student code still involves 10-year-old cruft from the MOOC that is doing all sorts of crazy must-never-fail-or-diverge things we really don't need. So two tests were hitting the 1-second timeout when there's no reason for them to take even 0.1 seconds. This would be a great opportunity to simplify things and rip out the stuff we don't need. I bumped the timeout to 3 seconds and it's working now.

  • The government may have declared the pandemic is over, but Trader Joe’s isn’t giving out free tastes.

  • It's a career stage I guess... As I got around to a bureaucratic task that should take an hour or a bit less, I thought of a way to do it more efficiently. I went to the directory where I put such work and discovered ... ... I came up with the more efficient way last year too.

  • As those of us on the quarter system finally celebrate the triumphant end of the academic year, we celebrate as only senior faculty know how: By scheduling the backlog of doctor, car, and home appointments.

  • The hardest optimization problem I can think of is what size cooler(s) to buy.

  • I just received a notification about a dumpster fire on campus. Except literally.

  • I know LLMs are causing the most jaws to drop and all, but I just turned my home printer on for the first time in a month and pressed print and it worked.

  • @wilbowma @koronkebitch @JonathanAldrich Strong agree. A judgment (sorry, no 'e' from me) is a relation. Which relation is defined by the collection of corresponding rules.
